DevOps is yet another IT term you may have heard of, yet you are once again unsure what it specifically relates to. DevOps stands for development and operations and whereas in the past development teams and operational teams would work virtually independently of each other, today, DevOps is usually performed by one individual team.
What does DevOps involve?
DevOps can best be described as a combination of cultural philosophies, practices and tools that enable a business or organization to deliver applications and services, or generate sales, swiftly and efficiently. DevOps also includes the development and improvement of existing products or services more rapidly than can be achieved by the more traditional software development and infrastructure management processes.
How does DevOps work?
Engineers working in DevOps are generally involved throughout the entire lifecycle of an application, from development and testing through to deployment and operations. DevOps can and usually also involves key elements of system security, sometimes referred to as DevSecOps. Dedicated DevOps teams tend to look at existing processes and look to increase their speed and efficiency. In the early days, DevOps was primarily involved in the automation/digitalisation of manual processes, but now involves existing ‘computerised’ services.
